Prayers for Haiti and Chile
From the rubble of the earthquake disasters in Haiti and Chile, there have emerged stories of miracles, love, hope, and goodness that have touched us all.
We would like to share with you one such story relayed to us by Sister Laurinda Mayer of ProPapa Honduras. In one village where ProPapa assists, the people remember only too well how they were affected by Hurricane Mitch in 1998 and a 7.3 Richter Scale earthquake in May 2008. And, for all the help they received, they now have done what they can to pay it forward.
Sister Laurinda wrote: "January, was a month that kept us focused on our hurting Brothers and Sisters in Haiti. Even, here at Pavon II, one of our poorest villages, they had a door to door collection in January with $55 being raised and sent from this very poor village".
The amount of $55 does not sound like a lot of money compared to the millions of dollars being raised elsewhere, but what makes this $55 significant is that it was everything the village people had to spare.
Now their hearts also extend to Chile.
With this story we ask that you keep Haiti and Chile in your thoughts and prayers as the massive task of repair and rebuild continues.

Being able to build a house so that a family can have a roof over their heads… that is
an amazing experience. Spending a week or two in a village, working alongside fellow brigade
members and learning how to mix mortar, stack concrete blocks, and frame windows has allowed
many volunteers not only the ability to learn new skills but also experiences that will not
soon be forgotten. |

“At the trip’s end, many volunteers on the medical team concur that the poor have given us
infinitely more than we could ever have given them. They have taught us lessons on patience,
long suffering, and wisdom. They have reinforced my long held belief that if we want Peace we
must work for Justice.” Chris Rodriguez, RN – Hastings, Pennsylvania |

Sweetened packaged foods and sugar filled drinks do great damage
to teeth of the rural poor when toothpaste, toothbrushes, fluoridation and
visits to the dentist are non-existent. As a result, adults and children
suffer significant tooth decay and gum damage. Dental Teams often have no
choice but to perform multiple extractions on each patient to relieve pain
and suffering of severe dental disease.
To mount these teams, oral surgeons, dentists, dental assistants, and non-clinical
support personnel are needed. And what’s needed to power these teams…donations,
supplies, and instruments. Join us for the experience of a lifetime. |

ProPapa is a non-profit organization run by dedicated volunteers.
We are a small charity driven by people like you – busy with families,
school, careers, and other involvements. Having witnessed the oppressive poverty,
many have chosen to make time in our lives to work with ProPapa.
We are all involved in different ways: going on Brigades, collecting and making donations,
helping run the organization, packing supplies, or soliciting others in our communities
to donate medical supplies or equipment, etc. Learn more about our initiatives and consider
sharing some of your most valuable resource – time; and in doing so, help give someone some hope.

What if the village you lived in was so poor that the children had to fetch drinking water every day,
jobs were few and far between, and no one in the family had ever been under a doctor’s care.
Volunteer with ProPapa. Help relieve some of the pain and suffering that the very poor deal
with every day. Leave behind a chance for a child to go to school, or an opportunity to live in a
home sheltered from the rain, or treat an infection before it does lifelong damage. In doing so,
you’ll come away with a deep abiding sense of accomplishment and memories of an experience that
will last a lifetime.

Here’s a novel
idea….donate where it gives YOU the greatest happiness
and sense of fulfillment! Education is the key to the
future and if keeping a poor child in school pleases
YOU, then direct your donation in that direction. A
donation to the medical & dental brigades insures
teams reach the poor every year. And if the thought of
having a role in relieving the pain of dental disease or
arresting a severe infection in its
tracks brings a smile to YOUR face, this is
where you should donate. Propapa has numerous endeavors to help the poor of Latin America, pick the one that gives YOU the greatest solace.
Wherever you choose to direct your donation with ProPapa, you should know that nearly every
penny will go toward making a difference for the poor. ProPapa is driven by volunteers, so
there is virtually no overhead.

Propapa
Newsroom
Plans to Strengthen ProPapa are now Underway.
As part of its journey to launch a complete image re-brand to take the organization to higher levels of public awareness and fundraising, ProPapa Missions America has appointed PR veteran Valerie Paavonpera (Proprietor, VPR & Media) as Administrative Officer of Communications, and James Samorian as Development Officer and Vice-Chair of the Fund Raising Committee.

Paavonpera brings with her more than 25 years of experience gained in the USA and Australia, in not-for-profits, corporate industry, and Government, working for and on behalf of, among others, the Australian Red Cross, where she headed marketing efforts for major fund raising campaigns and recruited personnel to work overseas for the International Red Cross; the YMCA; the Salvation Army; The Sydney Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games; as well as several major hospitals.
In consultation with the Board, Paavonpera will be overseeing ProPapa's public and media awareness campaigns and social media development, as well as seeking grants and securing other funding and philanthropic opportunities when and where plausible.
James Samorian is currently the Development Officer for Regional Programs at the University of Missouri. Prior to this he was responsible for new business development at Tranquility Internet/MayeCreate Design where he grew average monthly billings two-fold. He joined the company after having spent five years with the Columbia Country Club-American Golf Corporation. As ProPapa's Development Officer, Samorian will provide expert counsel on a wide range of fund raising initiatives planned for 2010.
Propapa Board Chairman William Casey said it was an unusual step for an organization that had up to now operated on mainly volunteers filling many roles, to appoint an Administrative Officer such as Paavonpera to a specific role dedicated to communications and fundraising.
"Along with a high energy and high impact ProPapa Fund Raising Committee, chaired by a professional and national caliber Development Officer, Ms Paavonpera will provide the creative juice and top notch work products to insure philanthropic success," said Casey.
"She will be ably supported by Mr Samorian’s passion for philanthropy and his experience in fund raising. Together their skills will serve the organization well as it begins its re-launch in a focused effort to raise more funds through increased public and corporate awareness."
Samorian said his role may currently be very hands-off compared to many within the organization, but "my passion to help others is second to none and I look forward to giving whatever advice and suggestions I may as we try to fit the fundraising portion of this organizational puzzle into place."
Speaking about the re-imaging of ProPapa, Paavonpera said this did not mean starting from scratch and completely re-organizing.
“ Rather we must keep doing the many things we do well out in the field, and give that support and recognition through a new appealing public look and feel - a new name, a new logo, a new website and most importantly more high level communications and focused fund raising strategies,” she said.
"Our ultimate aim is to grow public and corporate financial support and the support of individuals and groups who can further assist us to fulfill our mission in the field.”
Paavonpera said that when any "brand" which has obvious potential, has not received its due recognition and support over an extended time, it is vital to do all that is necessary to initiate renewed interest, recognition, and support.
“ This is truer than ever in our present economic climate which finds a highly competitive non-profit market where more and more organizations are competing for shrinking amounts of charity dollars. And if these challenges aren’t enough, add the understandable & appropriate outpouring of giving to Haiti and Chile”, she said.
