Clinical Specialty Brigades

Ask an American youngster about cleft lips, cleft pallets, club feet or scoliosis; they have likely never seen such anomalies. American children most often have these medical conditions corrected as infants. Think of the stigma a young Honduran must bear living with severe lip and mouth deformities as a teen or eventually as an adult.

The Specialty Brigades seek out these patients among the poor and give them a chance, through surgery, to live. The efforts are well worth while when you see the tears of joy come over the faces of parents who are seeing the face of their child no longer deformed by a severe cleft.

The Specialty Brigades have a dramatic impact on the lives of those they serve. Deformities, once repaired, bring children, previously hidden away into the light with an opportunity to play with other children.
Fundamentals of the Program
  • These teams, twelve to fifteen members, are usually smaller than the M.E.D. Brigades. They take tremendous planning to render corrective surgery in-country under trying conditions.
  • These Brigades usually need a physician specialist at the helm with a lay team leader handling logistics.
  • The advance team will help with patient finding and arranging a host hospital. Planning can be challenging, but the results are well worth it.
  • If you have clinical skills or know of a clinician that wishes to lead a team, please make contact brigades@propapa.org
  • If joining a Specialty Brigade is not an option, but you want to return smiles to those poor with deformities, do so through your generous donation donations@propapa.org
