Construction Brigade

No it’s not some old National Geographic photo. Many of the poor in Honduras still live in huts with the walls made out of sticks and the roof made out of thatched grasses. The wind and rain blow through the wood slats and dampen the beds of the young ones. And yes it’s true, a bug in its larval stage lives in the thatched roofs and drops to take up residence in the human hosts below, often causing heart damage as it travels through its life cycle. Plus the open door of such huts allow the farm animals free roam of these shacks, leaving droppings on the floor that spread untold numbers of germs.

The reasons are many why ProPapa is on its way toward building its 100th cinder block house.

Our construction teams try to build two such residences for the most needy during each Construction Brigade. Please join us and help us give a family a modest, but decent place to live!!!
Fundamentals of the Program
  • The team itself or donors from other sources, donate the money for one or more houses.
  • A Brigade Captain with the guidance of the Director of Construction Brigades, assembles a construction team from an individual school, university, church, or town that wants to help, but seeks the added enjoyment of working together as a cohesive group.
  • More often than not, a group is assembled from various communities and even several states. These mixed brigade experiences are often preferred as participants make friends with others from elsewhere in the States.
  • Construction knowledge is not necessary, but a strong back and a committed heart are required. It is valuable if a few people with construction, carpentry or masonry skills can join the team!
  • The Brigade Captain will insure supplies are in place, interpreters are available, and an on-site foreman supervises the build. The advance team will select the most appropriate family to receive the new house.
  • The rapport with your team members, and the interaction with villagers, the strong bond established with the recipient family, and leaving behind a concrete testament to the team’s efforts are the highlights of this brigade.
