Scholarship Programming

The country will never advance if the education level is not raised. Many Honduran children never receive higher than a third grade education. We are working to change this.

Public schools are free in Honduras. However, many families are too poor to afford the basic supply costs for their children’s education. The sponsorship covers the cost of school supplies and a complete uniform (shirt, pants/skirt, shoes.) Students send photos and write letters to their sponsors throughout the school year, which begins in February.

There are two levels of scholarship: Grade school - $50 per year and Junior High - $150 per year

This mother expresses what we hear from so many of the parents: “My son Melvin is in the Scholarship Program. He is very bright and decided to go on to Senior High School. I wash clothes for others to keep food on the table and would never have been able to send Melvin to Jr. or Sr. high school without the ProPapa Scholarship Program. We’re very grateful, thank you everyone for this great Program.” – Alejandra G.

Fundamentals of the Program
  • The Scholarship Program began in 1997 with only 36 students. It currently supports over 250 children each year.
  • Following the PPMA philosophy, the scholarships are a hand up, not a hand out. The Program provides the children an opportunity to become productive members of the community
  • The role of the coordinators is unique. Each coordinator is responsible for the village where they live and are familiar with the families and children. In this way, the neediest families can be helped. It also provides an opportunity for the coordinators for growth and employment.
  • The students must attend their classes on a regular basis, maintain good grades, study, and perform community service in order to remain in the program.
  • Regular meetings are held between the coordinators and students. The coordinators are committed to the success of the students and use the meetings to provide encouragement. The children have many hardships – sickness, caring for younger siblings, parental illness or absenteeism, or the need to work – so the coordinators work with the students to keep them on track with their education
  • None of this would be possible without our sponsors!
